One Man Band: A Metaphor

"Two is better than one"

SYNOPSIS:
'One Man Band' is an Pixar Studios animated short film. The perspective of the story may be vary in accordance to the people watching it. The story is based on a musician, waiting in one corner of a piazza for people to tip him as he keeps playing his routine tunes. Soon, he spots a girl with a gold coin wanting to make a wish near a fountain in the piazza. He seizes the opportunity and grabs the little girl's attention to tip him instead of throwing the gold coin into the fountain. As it goes on, a newcomer comes into the scene, playing more up-tempo scores, attracting the little girl even more. Intimidated, both musicians step up their game and trying to get the attention in hopes that the little girl would tip one of them. During the musical battle, the little girl accidentally drops the coin and it goes into the sewer. The girl angrily demands for a new coin from both of the musicians. Since neither of them has any money to repay her, she then insists of taking a violin and an iron cup. She tunes the instrument and starts to play like a true virtuoso, making a passer-by to drop in front of her a huge bag of gold coins. Elatedly, she hugs the bag and takes two coins out of it. As the two musicians eagerly want to get their hands on the coins, she throws the coins into the fountain, landing at the topmost of the fountain. The scene comes to an end, the musicians stand on top of each other to reach for the gold coins.

The story emphasizes on teamwork. In my opinion, if the two musicians work well together, the most possible thing that is to happen is the little girl giving them her coin as a token of appreciation. They do not even has the slightest idea of how well and beautiful they sound when they both play together. On the other hand, in the end of the story, somehow, the two musicians work together to reach for the gold coins which landed on the top of the fountain.

  1. Pretty irony, isn't it?

In the end, those two rivals suppose to compete each other for the coins in that part but instead of that, they cooperate together for it! Of course, they might forever become rivals to each other, but just for their greed's sake, they are willing to cooperate. Friendship is not possible be involved here because their cooperation is because of their greed and not by their 'sudden friendship'. Therefore we can see that the story also involves irony in which the two one-man-bands cooperate together instead of competing with each other, and their value of teamwork is a sham one as their act of teamwork is stimulated by their own greed.
